Cyrenius Wakefield (1815-1885): Dr. Cyrenius Wakefield settled in Bloomington, IL in 1850. Wakefield was an accomplished druggist and patentee of medicines. His list of patents includes that for Blackberry Balsam, a medicine intended to cure diarrhea and other ailments. The worldwide demand for Blackberry balsam, along with Wakefield’s other patented medicines, helped to put Bloomington on the map.
