On November 17, 1958, a group of twenty-four medical assistants—medical secretaries, laboratory technicians, and registered nurses—met to discuss the American Association of Medical Assistants. Una Garihee summarized information gleaned at the National Convention in Chicago and presented material on organizing a local chapter of the association. A committee was drawn up to formulate bylaws and draft a constitution, as well as to recommend a slate of officers.

At the December 1958 meeting, the Constitution and Bylaws were accepted, and motions regarding specifics of scheduling meetings, membership fees, and other aspects of organizing were approved. Una Garihee was elected President and Joan McKee, Vice President. See Folder 1 for minutes of these organizing meetings and for list of founding members. The McLean County Medical Assistants Association is no longer active.
